On Saturday May 21 (Sunday rain date) New Plimmoth Gard presents Pirates Ashore – a reenactment of the 1646 visit of English privateers to Plymouth. This is our major event of the year, featuring three awesome pirate reenactor crews, The Mayflower Society and many others (see list below).
For the history buff this is a great event because it demonstrates the tension between the religious Pilgrims and freewheeling privateers. And – small world – privateer Captain Thomas Cromwell carried a letter of marque from the Earl of Warwick, one of the holders of patent of Plymouth Colony. Rowdy sailors arrive by sea, a murder trial, political intrigue, and even a mini-concert of 17th century song – it’s hard to fit it all into one day, but we’ll try.
Here’s the timeline for the day:
9:35AM Cannon fires signaling Ships in the Harbor – waterfront south of State Pier
10:00 Shallop arrives at State Pier with visiting privateers, met there by the New Plimmoth Gard
10:30 All arrive at the Mayflower Society House, 4 Winslow Street. Pirate encampment and action continues here throughout the day.
11:30 Swordfight between a sailor and his captain – on the sidewalk at 31 Main Street
Noon Members of the Pilgrim Festival Singers present a concert of 17th-century tunes in the garden behind the Spooner House Museum, 27 North Street.
1:00PM Sailor gets a whipping – Mayflower House
1:30 Another fight between sailor and captain, this time the sailor dies – Water Street
2:00 Funeral for sailor – Mayflower House
2:30 Privateer Captain is arrested and charged with murder – North Street
3:00 Captain is tried for murder by a Council of War. If he’s convicted his crew might revolt…
6:00PM Buffet for costumed reenactors. All welcome to drink the local brews and ‘strong water’, and sing some bawdy ballads (historically correct, of course!). Full Sail Pub, 47 Court Street
